Does it ever feel like your child is at their most energetic when you’re at your most exhausted? You want to spend time with your child, but you can’t always match their energy. Is there a happy medium for both you and your child? As a matter of fact, there is. You just need some games to play while sitting down.
Games to Play While Sitting Down
Sometimes you just need to sit. That’s okay. Your child, however, may need to spend some energy. While you’d be perfectly happy coloring or doing a puzzle with your child, your child would rather dance with you. These moments happen all the time, and they can be frustrating for both parents and children. That’s why we’ve put together this list of games that will give you the best of both worlds. They let you sit down for a bit, while your child moves and plays.
Simon Says
This game works best if you have more than one child or if your little one has a friend over. You probably already know how this game works. The most important part is that you get to be Simon. You’ll give the children tasks like “Simon says dance” or “Simon says to hop on one foot.” If you give a command without saying “Simon says,” the children shouldn’t do the task.
Make Believe Animals
You can be the lion cub, and your child can be the mama lion going out to hunt. Or you can be the hibernating mama bear while your cubs go out to see their friends. Or you can be one of Peter Rabbit’s parents while Peter Rabbit runs from Mr. McGregor. Do you see where we’re going with this? The point is that you get to stay in the den, cave, or rabbit hole while your child goes on the adventures. You’re still very much a part of the game, but you get to play a more low-key role.
The Freeze Game
This game is like musical chairs, but it can be played with only one child. Your child can move and dance as music plays. When the music stops, your child should freeze in whatever position they happen to be in. The game will get your child into some silly spots, which will lead to plenty of laughter. Your job, of course, is to stop and start the music, and you don’t have to be standing up to do that. If your child has a ton of energy, this is one of the best games to play while sitting down.
Put the Baby to Bed
This game is a bit of a role reversal. Your child gets to play the parent, and you get to play the baby. Have your child “put the baby to bed.” They can sing you a song, gather some stuffed animals, and tell you a story. Not only do you get to sit down for this game, you can actually lay down. If your child likes make-believe games, then this one can keep you both entertained.
Bubbles
Of course, there are always the classics. When you need games to play while sitting down, bubbles are a great option. If it’s a nice day, go sit outside with some bubble solution. You can blow bubbles while your child chases and pops them.
